Stanisława Walasiewicz dominated for Poland in the 1930s and even into the 1940s, thereafter gaining US citizenship following the end of WWII and becoming known as Stella Walsh.

Her sad death at the hands of muggers in 1980 subsequently raised questions about gynandromorphism, which is likely why her achievements are less heralded than they might otherwise have been…
