The first Japanese woman to win an Olympic medal!
Kinue Hitomi comes in at #7 in the all-time top Women’s Long Jump rankings. As the first Japanese woman to win an Olympic Medal, she wanted to inspired others to progress women’s sports in Japan.
“I hope that many Japanese female athletes will participate in the next tournament. I want to show the world the true strength of the Yamato Nadeshiko and make Japan’s brilliance shine globally. To do that, we cannot stay as we are. Not only must we improve our techniques and records, but we must also change the Japanese perception of women’s sports. I want my junior female athletes to rise up so that we can raise the Japanese flag.”
Her life ended too soon at only 24 years old, but her story lives on as we remember her extraordinary atheliticism!
