Quite simply, the farthest Long Jumper in History…POWELL’s epic 8.95m World Record came in arguably the greatest Long Jump dual EVER between himself and the legendary Carl Lewis at the Tokyo 1991 World Championships…
Lewis, unbeaten in an astonishing 65 competitions over 10 years took the lead in Round 4 with the longest jump ever, landing at 8.91m [+2.9 m/s], POWELL responded with a jump that looked better, but marginally fouled, and then in Round 5 he replicated it, this time legally, and so the new World Record flashed up at 8.95m [+0.3 m/s] sending him into elation! Lewis came back with 8.87m followed by 8.84m in the Final Round, and incredibly averaged 8.86m for his last 4 jumps…but it wasn’t enough, and as we write, POWELL’s WR is now in its 33rd year!!!💥
